Recently, I’ve found myself intrigued by the potential of instruments that focus on respiration using carbon dioxide sensors. While breath is an integral component to the organized production of sound, even with the human voice and wind instruments, respiration and subsequent CO2 production from a performer is largely secondary to the sound produced. With this etude, the thought is to focus exclusively on respiration – wherein active CO2 levels become a controlled parameter intended to drive a piece – more specifically, one where it will be used to manipulate control voltage to process the input from an external instrument. Of course, there’s nothing new about sensor-based electroacoustic processing – to overcome this, the plan is to actively manipulate the environment in which the performance exists through the implementation of CO2 in the form of dry ice as an integral part of the composition. While this is admittedly theatric, it is my intention that it will set a baseline for future works, hopefully leading to a system in which ambient CO2 readings and manipulation can be used to control and influence additional complex/interactive systems as well as serve as the springboard for other biometric-influenced performances and compositions.
